History



1992 March Rokureikai, the alumni association Nagano Prefectural College College, submitted a petition to the prefectural assembly with 120,000 signatures, requesting that the college be upgraded to a four-year program, which was subsequently adopted.
2001 March Rokureikai submitted another petition to the prefectural assembly with the same intent, and it was adopted.
2006 september Shoichi Washizawa, then Mayor of Nagano, proposed to then-Governor Hitoshi Murai that the university education system be changed to a four-year program.
2008 March Prefectural comprehensive external auditor proposes a four-year training program.
2009 december Governor Murai announced the establishment of an expert review committee in the prefectural assembly.
2010 February A review committee has been established, comprised of representatives from Nagano Prefecture, Nagano Prefectural College, and economic organizations.
2011 July The review committee has compiled a report stating that a four-year system is necessary, and Governor Abe Shuichi has indicated his intention to begin concrete preparations.
2012 February Nagano Prefectural College College has decided to become a four-year institution.
April A preparatory office for the establishment of a prefectural university has been set up within the prefectural government.
May A preparatory committee has been established and is beginning to consider the basic concept.
september Nagano Prefecture presented a draft plan to the preparatory committee consisting of two departments in the first part of a comprehensive management program.
2013 June Nagano Prefecture has proposed a revised plan to the preparatory committee, adding Faculty of Health and Human Development, which is a successor to Nagano Prefectural College, to create a system of two faculties and three departments.

2014 February Nagano Prefecture has decided to postpone the target date for the university's opening from the original April 2017 to April 2018, and has formulated the "Basic Plan Policy for the Development of Facilities for the New Prefectural University."
April The Prefectural University Establishment Preparation Office has been reorganized into the Prefectural University Establishment Preparation Division.
July Nagano Prefecture announced that it will appoint Ando Kunitake, former president of Sony, as chairman of the board of directors of The University of Nagano and Kindaichi Masumi professor emeritus at Keio University, as president of the university.
september The Prefectural University Establishment Committee has been formed.
2016 February At a subcommittee meeting of the founding committee, a policy was announced to change the name of the Faculty of General Management to Faculty of Global Management Studies
March The name of the new prefectural university has been decided as "The University of Nagano" through a public competition.

2018 January We applied to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for approval to establish a public university corporation.

  • The Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology has approved the establishment of the The University of Nagano Graduate School (Graduate School of Social Innovation, Graduate School of Health and Nutritional Sciences).
